BIOSPHERE FOUNDATION
Biosphere Foundation is a USA 501 (c) 3 organization founded in 1991 for research and education, we are currently based in Bali Indonesia where we gave our Biosphere Learning Center and a 113' sailing ship named Mir. The Foundation owns a limited liability company (PT Biosphere Stewardship Center) in Bali Indonesia; and has a partnership with Yayasan Biosfir Indonesia (Jakarta) who has an agreement with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry to carryout nature stewardship programs in Taman National Bali Barat. The Foundation is led by Abigail Alling and Mark Van Thillo, two of the 'Biospherians' who lived for 2-years (1991-1993) in Biosphere 2, a laboratory for the study of global ecology; and navigated by an international board of advisors Our mission is to mitigate effects of climate change through ecological restoration in the Coral Triangle and inspire a Healthy Biosphere Initiative for clean air, water and food through lifelong learning and community-led nature stewardship programs at our Biosphere Stewardship Center and onboard sailing vessel Mir. This past year, we led a Coral Triangle Voyages (2021-2025) to Raja Ampat to work with island peoples to create Home Food Gardens and regenerate coral reefs. At the heart of the mission is our flagship Mir and its crew who are the ambassadors on the oceans, sharing our message and knowledge with distant communities, while creating a legacy of applied skills that adapt and grow with each new location and challenge. Biosphere Stewardship Center and RV Mir work together and are hubs for learning: one on land and one at sea. They are designed to provide an integrated, immersive learning environment; a living laboratory that sustains a knowledge treasury for the people from the Coral Triangle and beyond who are the future leaders, stewards and trustees of their local ecosystems.
