International Yacht Bureau (IYB)

International Yacht Bureau (IYB) is an independent organization with the purpose of safeguarding life, property, and the marine environment. Our history dates back to 2006, when IYB was established in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA to inspect and evaluate the technical condition of private and commercial yachts. Today, our network of survey and plan approval stations can be found in every major yachting location worldwide. The responsibility of IYB is similar to that of a classification society, such as ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, etc, but focused solely on yachts. IYB verifies that yachts within its Register comply with the standards that are established for design, construction, and periodic survey. Several of the world's Maritime Administrations have delegated to IYB the certification of yachts according to IMO Conventions and Codes. In most cases we do this for well-built unclassed yachts, but our yacht-specific knowledge and expertise is increasingly requested for classed yachts (ABS, BV, LR, RINA, etc.) The degree of authorization from the individual administrations varies. For most flags, IYB is delegated the total certification process. With other flags, the process is shared with the Maritime Administration, such as the issuance of full term certificates. Statutory certification has a life time perspective for each yacht, from initial certification in connection with delivery, through annual, intermediate, and renewal surveys during the operational life of the yacht.
