RICE-The Research Institute for the Care of Older People
RICE is an independent charity dedicated to improving the lives of people diagnosed with dementia, and related conditions, through research, diagnosis, treatment and support. Since it was formed in 1985 RICE has made a real contribution in the field of dementia and has pioneered new treatments and services. Key achievements include; - Opened one of the first Memory Clinics in the UK (now a standard model throughout the UK) - Key early participant in research trials for the 4 drugs currently licensed to treat Alzheimer's disease in the UK - Helped develop national 'best practice' guidelines for doctors and health professionals to ensure people with dementia and their carers receive the right health and social care. - Supported research to ensure the needs of frail elderly patients were considered when setting dosage levels for medication - Developed the BASQID (Bath Assessment of Subjective Quality of Life in Dementia) RICE continues to work at the forefront of dementia research working with pharmaceutical companies to help develop new drug treatments; it also has close links with the Universities of Bath and Bristol, and the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
