The Code of a Scientologist requires every Scientologist to make a solemn commitment to benefit others: "As a Scientologist, I pledge myself to the Code of Scientology for the good of all. ... To use the best I know of Scientology to the best of my ability; to help my family, friends, groups and the world. ... To make this world a saner better place." Churches of Scientology and their parishioners carry out and support many humanitarian initiatives and affiliated social betterment programs. Where there is a need for assistance in improving conditions, the Church of Scientology and its members step in. The scope of the activities is limitless—from caring for the environment to looking after the elderly and raising funds for worthy charitable causes. Of particular address is the global devastation and human misery wrought by drug abuse, illiteracy and moral decay—to say nothing of natural and man-made disasters. They threaten to rip the social fabric to shreds and in many parts of the world these societal ills have already caused irreparable damage. Further, and to realize Scientology's greater humanitarian objective, the Church has made readily available, easily assimilated and rapidly distributable multimedia tools to raise awareness, educate and activate millions. The goal is at once bold and ambitious: to resolve broad planetary ills and arrest a creeping cultural decline, all while uplifting society by instilling commonly shared values. Each campaign is founded on the proposition that education is the cornerstone of change. They acknowledge that only when truly informed can individuals make lasting and transformative decisions to live drug-free, ethical, respectful lives in harmony with their loved ones and neighbors. Inspired by the words of L. Ron Hubbard that "a being is only as valuable as he can serve others," Scientologists assume responsibility not only for self and family, but also for the larger community.
