American Spaces are modern physical settings tailored for fostering relationships with foreign audiences. As a global network, they build bridges between people of other countries and the United States, increasing understanding, collaboration and partnership. U.S. Department of State’s American Spaces program supports places where people can exchange ideas and experience and learn about American culture, history and values. These are places where visitors—especially young people—can learn about the United States, access the open internet, build job skills, and participate in dialogue with each other and Americans in a safe environment. Throughout their 100-year history, American Spaces have taken countless shapes, sizes and styles. Descriptions and missions have included libraries, schools, even theaters, but one defining component has never changed: people. Under the sponsorship of a U.S. embassy or consulate, each American Space provides a broad range of programs, such as: - Educational advising for those who want to study in the U.S. - Workshops on a range of topics from career skills to English language learning - Classes and clubs introducing new technologies, 21st century digital skills, and academic resources - Films, discussions, and lectures on entrepreneurship, leadership, current events, international affairs, and much more. Programs at American Spaces are free and open to the public, equipping the U.S. government with effective and attractive platforms for person-to-person foreign interaction.
