United States Department of War

The Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict (OASW(SO/LIC)) oversees and advocates for special operations and irregular warfare throughout the Department of War. In this capacity, OASW (SO/LIC) exercises authority over special operations forces, providing civilian oversight and ensuring these capabilities are properly resourced, ready, and aligned with the National Defense Strategy. OASD(SO/LIC) assists and supports the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in developing policy, guidance, and recommendations pertaining to special operations, low-intensity conflict, and irregular warfare policy matters, ensuring that the DoD maintains related capabilities and capacity and incorporates mission options during planning.
