Alden is responsible for the development and implementation of an energy management program within the Canadian Mining operations at Walter Energy. In this role he identifies and manages the implementation of energy savings projects and initiatives. He also works closely with the province’s utility, BC Hydro, to access incentive funding to help drive energy conservation. As part of the Energy Management program, he also is the lead in developing the company’s position on and strategy for complying with federal and provincial GHG reduction mechanisms including the Cap and Trade regulations currently proposed for the Province of British Columbia. As part of this, Alden sits in the mining and smelting industry GHG panel facilitated by the Mining Association of British Columbia. In this roll he reviewed modelling data provided by the BC Government and provided input into the development process of the cap and trade regulations. Alden is also currently developing a GHG offset portfolio that takes a holistic view of the GHG liabilities and solutions that exist at the site operations. By creating solutions with a shared value system, not only will GHG issues be addressed for the sites, but solutions will also create opportunities for Walter Energy's partners, contractors, First Nations communities, and other stakeholders. Alden also directs the company’s sustainability initiatives, mainly conformance with the Mining Association of Canada’s (MAC) Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Protocols. As part of the sustainability initiative, Alden has worked to minimise operational risk and maximise compliance mechanisms as the federal and provincial governments work to meet their legislated GHG emission reduction targets. In addition, he is responsible for developing the company’s sustainability framework, policies and vision.
