George Smith is a British, handmade furniture company set in North East England, who expertly design and manufacture items to exact client specification. They work with ranging clientele, from the rich and famed, to high end restaurants such as The Ivy, or private members clubs such as Soho house. Responsible for the realisation and rapid turnaround of bespoke furniture models and drawings produced for on-site manufacture, addressing key design requirements and creating solutions to varied concepts. Development of “highest sales value” George Smith products, optimising design for manufacture and design for assembly principles resulting in significant cost reductions.

Specialising in novelty wooden gifts, Woodcut and Co design, manufacture and retail products in the north east of England. As a University based start-up, the company was set up, in association with Young Enterprise, by a team of six students with a broad ranging skill set. As a company Director, I had responsibilities in project planning, business development, financial planning and projections, as well as coordinating and driving the team. Apart from this, my main role as lead product designer meant being in charge of the design of our products, from initial concept, through refinement, manufacture and post production processes.

Working on the product design and development of medical technology and consumer goods. I took part on a range of cutting edge and novel projects for eg's clients having input across the whole product design process; from project start-up meetings, brainstorming sessions, concept development, prototyping, detail design, design for assembly and transfer to manufacture. Professional contact with clients, suppliers and colleges helped me broaden my knowledge, experience and skills for my final year at university and future career.

Serving food and drink to a range of clientele vastly improved my people skills and ability to deal with difficult situations. As a small establishment, my role had a range of additional responsibilities, from stock control and ordering to food preparation etc. I gained more responsibilities over time such as cashing up and closing the premises, helping me become more conscientious and adept at managing my time.
