September 1979 – September 1983 (4 years one month) Braunschweig Area, Germany In 1979 I opened a cultural "British Centre" in the form of British Pub but actually a combination of bar/Restaurant, Language School, Travel Agency, (specialising in holidays to the UK), translation service, a shop supplying articles from the UK and a Pub where Anglophiles could congregate to improve their English conversational skills and where UK citizens living in Germany could meet each other as well as the Germans. This was a perfect opportunity to gain Intelligence. A business centre in the building also attracted visiting business people and acted as a reference library for English teachers as well as local businesses. In all senses of the word this was a true Cultural Centre which enabled me to invite many civil dignitaries to the opening ceremony which was performed by a councillor of the City of Brunswick. The British Consular General visited shortly after the opening giving the maximum coverage in print, TV, and radio. By developing the corporate identity, I positioned the company such that it became a viable pilot object for a franchised chain. I then recruited two franchisees in 1982 in Hamburg and Berlin before regrettably being ordered to sell the business outright in 1983 to concentrate on the travel, business, and franchising sides.
