Interval Data Systems was founded under the belief that the use of data should be applied to operating portfolios of buildings more efficiently. It was clear, at the time, that the buildings control companies did not use data to operate better. Ten years later they’ve become better at delivering data however the application of data to improving operations only recently has begun to progress. It was also clear 10 years ago that utility data; billing and metering data could be highly useful in evaluating buildings operations. So we integrated these data streams into one common platform, displayed through one interface and combined analytics for BAS data and energy data. After years of evaluating the data it’s become clear that the industry still has an imperfect understanding where efficiency and savings comes from, it’s the automation or lack thereof that’s the root of the inefficiencies. The current purchasing, design and installation process for control systems predictably and reliability deliver buildings 70-80% efficient. So IDS has evolved into a technology enabled service company. We provide the software infrastructure (data management, analytics, and enterprise integration) to manage the portfolios operational data combined with a service to correct the automation of the control system. To date we have analyzed operations of over 250 buildings and currently collect over 300,000K trends daily and have over 800 building years of operational data. Industry wide, automation delivery quality (BAS and Integration with Lighting Control) is the most challenging part of building delivery. To address this industry wide issue we improved automation delivery quality by improving section 23, use ASHRAE (G36 High Performance SOO), check the code written by the control contractor (no one does this) then we verify operations using operational data and our analyst. This process yields much better automation quality.
