Brett Knight's past jobs
As a slot editor on the Live Desk, I oversaw the copy desk for business, metro and sports news and feature content; managed copy flow; and coordinated with other desks. I previously served as the jack-of-all-trades of the sports department, with weekly shifts as a backfield editor (focused on bigger-picture issues like story structure and fairness), as a slot editor and as a web producer and with occasional shifts as a copy editor. I also regularly served as the weekend or night editor, in each case helping plan the section and adjust it for breaking news; communicating with reporters about angles, lengths and deadlines; and serving as a backfield editor.
I copy edited in the metro, business and sports sections. While working in the sports department, I had weekly shifts as a slot editor and spent a month embedded as a web producer.
As the slot editor for the sports department, I managed section real estate, including booking out the section; selected wire articles for publication; performed big-picture editing on staff-written articles; supervised reporters, editors and designers throughout the production process, re-editing stories and rewriting display type as needed; and approved print pages for publication. As a designer for the local news and sports departments, I laid out pages in both broadsheet and tabloid formats and selected photos for print.
I wrote swimming and water polo feature stories for the United States Olympic Committee's website.
As a Dow Jones News Fund intern, I worked as a copy editor on the sports desk.
I shepherded the local entertainment section of a student-run weekly magazine through the entire editorial process, from collaborating on the editorial calendar and pitching story ideas to copy editing the final product.
I wrote stories on the University of Missouri men's basketball and women's soccer teams.
Working for the Olympic News Service, I interviewed athletes at the field hockey venue of the Beijing Games and copy edited others' reports.
I wrote for the St. Louis Rams and Olympics pages of a blogging website.
I wrote stories for the sports section, particularly on the swimming beat.
