I worked in the radio section of NZ’s major telecommunications provider. I started as a trainee and gained my qualifications with a mix of on the job training and blocks of study at Christchurch Polytechnic. The Radio section comprised disciplines from Landmobile radio, Microwave, Multi-access radio systems for remote communities and satellite communications. I gained a good cross section of skills from this, with the majority of my time as a qualified technician being in microwave radio systems. This encompassed maintenance, fault response and installation/commissioning of long haul bearers. The Christchurch branch covered a very large region, so a lot of travel was required. Achievements • Graduated as a Radio Technician with straight A passes • Was one of the first female Radio Technicians in NZ • Quickly moved through the ranks to become a senior lead Technician
