I am the CEO of Novare Equity Partners, a private equity firm investing exclusively in Sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa. My areas of particular expertise include asset-liability matching, strategic asset allocation as well as alternative investment and private equity in Southern and sub-Saharan Africa. I was instrumental in launching the first Novare Africa Property Fund in 2010. I co-founded Novare in October 2000. At this stage I had 12 years of investment experience. as CEO I was responsible to head up the team responsible for structuring and management of multi-managed investment solutions for major institutional clients. I was also responsible for managing of the the first fund of hedge funds in South Africa, the Mayibentsha Hedge Fund of Funds since April 2003. In addition I was responsible for manager research of long-only and hedge funds for Novare. I subsequently also launched the first Novare Africa Property Fund in 2010. www.novare.com
In March 1999 I returned to South Africa and joined Gensec Asset Management (then the second largest asset management company in South Africa - now called Sanlam). Imanaged various institutional accounts and responsible for managing the investments of Pension and Provident Funds. Responsibilities further included the allocation and switching of investments between various asset classes (shares, bonds, cash, property, hedge funds and international investments) as well as various other investment product/asset classes (e.g. structured equity products). Assisted clients in setting investment policies, objectives and strategies. Worked on defining investment mandates for clients. Worked with the team in London on the multi-manager products used for South African clients. This involved setting investment objectives and manager selection.
In September 1998 I moved to the United Kingdom and worked at NPI Insurance Company. My focus was on product development of investment products and pension products for the United Kingdom market.
I received a bursary from Sanlam to study actuarial science at the University of Stellenbosch. In January 1993 I started working at Sanlam in the actuarial department. I worked on product development of Life Insurance products (investments and risk) for the South African market.
