I was initially taken on as a QA Analyst within the development team, with additional systems admin responsibilities which included building and configuring PCs, installing new equipment, researching a move to a new ISP and maintaining and implementing enterprise anti-virus software as well as testing our award-winning retail merchandising software. After just over a year my role changed to include programming work on a new product prototype using VB6 and SQL Server, and shortly after my role officially changed to that of Analyst Programmer. This role included work on both legacy and new offerings, and spanned the full gamut of development work from design through to client site implementation. I was also responsible for writing much of the product documentation - this was a gap that was evident when I started at the company. I started out writing short documents for the testers which covered new functionality and how to use it, and this gradually progressed into writing full documentation. When the company moved over to .Net in 2001 I moved with the rest of the team, working on a suite of migration tools to facilitate upgrades from the VB version of the software, and then moving into full development of new features. During my time at Compass/Alphameric/Torex I established myself as the unofficial liaison between development and the other departments, helping to debug failing calculations (the calculations were written by configuration consultants), explaining and demonstrating the finer points of new functionality and aiding with reproducing and pinning down discrepancies. Projects I worked on included: * (Internal) Y2K analysis, the move to .Net from VB, moving to SQL Server from Access, setting up a hosted web version of the Buyer product * (external) Ann Taylor, Tesco, Mexx, Matalan, The Outdoor Group, River Island, Early Learning Centre, among others. * C#, SQL Server, VB, Access *Company bought by Alphameric and then by Torex Retail (Now owned by Micros)
