The Ba-Kholokoe (also sometimes referred to as “Ma-Kholokoe” or “Ba- Khulukwe” in the history documents) is a royal tribe in Southern Africa that came from the splinter groups that comprised of the Ba-Tswana, Ba-Tlokoa,& Ba-Rolong of whom were travelling north-west towards what is now Botswana and Namibia after the Mzilikazi “uMfecanne – Difaqane” wars . They remained for a while in the region of the North West Province, around the Magaliesberg, and then travelled south-east passing through Rustenburg, through Johannesburg, through Heidelberg and Standerton then settled for about 400 years in Thaba-Kholokoe around Steelpoort near Burgersfort. From there they moved to Daggakraal, originally named Lesakeng la Matekwane in SeSotho, in the province of Mpumalanga. From Lesakeng la Matekwane in Mpumalanga they moved to Verkykerskop, originally named Nete, a farmland area between Thaba Ntshu (Harrismith) and Memel in the Free State province. It is here that King Matsimela finally setup his Kingdom around the 1600s. The descendants of King Matsimela are Lobane, Lehasa, Maphale, Tshele and Motaoane the last born. According to the Ba-Kholokoe oral tradition. The kingdom is now presently lead by HRH King Letsitsa III.
