Location: San Francisco Bay Area

The Tooling & Infrastructure team builds and maintains Stripe’s public web presence, including stripe.com. We own the integration with our headless CMS to allow colleagues throughout the company to publish and edit stripe.com and other sites. We build tooling to enable our designers and engineers to make the moments on our site that inform and inspire. We make sure content is available in every language and market we support while facilitating how our translators do their job. We do all of this with an eye toward ensuring our sites are blazing fast and rock solid stable.

Title: Design Engineer, Web Presence + Platform

The Web Presence & Platform team at Stripe is a group of interactive designers, front-end specialists, web strategists, platform engineers, and every skill set in-between. We design and build what is, for many, their first impression of Stripe. We want to make every pixel count, we want it to be enthralling, and we want to help other Stripes seamlessly benefit from our systematic work.

Company: Arbitrary
Title: President / Head of Technology
Period: Aug 2013 - Dec 2018 (5 years, 4 months)
Location: San Francisco Bay Area

Arbitrary is distributed design-technology studio. We build bespoke teams for projects ranging from web sites to apps to UI prototyping. Notable work: - Strava.com frontend engineering in collaboration with Strava’s internal design team. Built a bespoke set of frontend components coupled w/ performant vanilla JS to keep file size to a minimum. - Various collaborations with Google Creative Lab. - A design system + headless CMS integration in partnership with SuperFriendly for the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’ web presence. The site is a Laravel/PHP application that powers their Identity Online customer reward system. Was deeply involved with everything from ops and telemetry to CMS vendor selection (Contentful) to writing a custom integration between Pattern Lab & Handlebars for template rendering. - InVision Design Genome project. A React/SSR application that told the story of how companies organize their design teams. Wrote custom animations + data visualizations to represent org charts. I also published articles in net magazine and Smashing Magazine about prototyping (both hardware and software), ran a seminar for Microsoft’s Virtual Academy on PHP + Azure and spoke at conferences like CAMPFest. I combined my passions for entrepreneurship, code and teaching into a collaboration with InnoTech college in Calgary to develop a bootcamp code curriculum.

Title: Adjunct Faculty
Period: Sep 2015 - May 2016 (8 months)
Location: San Francisco Bay Area

Taught introductory web courses to BA Design students across two topics: - Digital Literacy, exploring the history of digital media with a focus on the relationship between technology and art. Students developed an eye for designing for interaction thru prototyping as well as basic web development skills (HTML, CSS, JS) - Visual Communication, developing fluency in designing for web by learning the fundamentals to web design, including the crit process, prototyping, and presentation skills. Curriculum was designed to bolster students knowledge in digital design history and web fundamentals.

Title: Adjunct Faculty
Period: Sep 2008 - May 2014 (5 years, 8 months)
Location: New York, NY

Part-Time Faculty in the MFA Design + Technology (MFADT) program at the New School. Fully developed the course curriculum and syllabus around two topics: - Introductory full stack web development. Classes focused on topics like how to set up web servers, how HTTP works, vanilla JavaScript to frameworks like React. - Dynamic interfaces, exploring the boundaries of interactivity by challenging conventional paradigms. Students would (as examples) make data visualizations out of junk mail or turn their touchpad into a Morse code interface. My students have gone on to thought leadership positions in creative code, UX engineering, design, open source and software engineering.

Company: Big Spaceship
Title: Technology Director
Period: May 2005 - Sep 2012 (7 years, 4 months)

As Technology Director, I played a lead role in Big Spaceship’s data flow and user experience process, building the neon green boxes that lay the groundwork for achieving what was once thought impossible. Besides programming, responsibilities included resource allocation, new business proposals, hiring and managing projects from concept to completion. Notable projects include: - Skittles.com, a custom built PHP application that was amongst the first mobile optimized sites released. The backend featured a CMS used by Skittles international marketing teams to sync and trade content across internationalized versions of the site. The frontend was a hilarious and weird visit into the Rainbow. My face was converted to ASCII art in the source code and featured on the front page of TechCrunch. - Chobani.com. I led a team that built a highly customized WordPress admin that supported displaying Chobani’s fully product line, intertwined with social media content via custom (and open sourced!) WordPress plugins. - NikeAir.com. This site was shortlisted by the FWA as one of the most influential sites in the first decade of Flash. It won nearly 20 notable design awards including being featured in 2007 Communication Arts Interactive Annual. - HungrySuitcase.com, a Flash website for Royal Carribean which was a SXSW Interactive winner. - UrbanDaddy, an early (2009) iPhone app that was featured in Apple’s national print advertising campaigns. - Movie & television show web sites including The Da Vinci Code, Stranger than Fiction, Family Guy, LOST, 30 Days of Night, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and more. Many won notable design accolades like FWA and Webby awards, amongst others. I also represented Big Spaceship at a number of design conferences including FITC, Web 2.0 Expo and Dig South.
