Jeremy Diller's past jobs
Title: Sr. Manager, Software Development
Period: Jan 2009 - Jun 2011 (2 years, 5 months)

We've continued to expand our internal development efforts, focusing more on client-facing and business partner development. This has created a need within our group for additional staffing and project management personnel. As the Sr. Manager of Software Development I was responsible for the success of multiple projects and 15 people comprised of entry-level developers, project managers, report writers and business/systems analysts. We have been able to consolidate all of our help desk operations into a single system using JIRA and Confluence. While having the right technology was a critical part of the overall project, it was no small task consolidating separate software, hardware and client support groups into one process and one software solution. Consolidating help desk has led to a reduce support overhead, better visibility into all support functions and a reduction in time-to-resolution. We've developed our own tax return preparation solution that integrates directly into our workflow management software. This has already begun to provide significant reductions in 3rd party licensing (and dependence) as well as significant automation possibilities. The tax return preparation application is developed using Microsoft's .NET 4.0 framework, WCF and a SQL backend. The majority of my responsibilities involve coordinating the business units, our internal development and hardware resources and the executive team that drives direction. While I do provide guidance and coaching to the project management and business analysis resources, I've worked very hard to promote and hire the right resources for DMA.

Company: SGU
Title: Web Developer
Period: Jan 2008 - Jan 2011 (3 years)

The SGU is a weekly podcast that discusses and promotes science and critical thinking. The SGU worked with a designer to create the design of their new website. I then took the sliced up Photoshop images and provided CSS to provide the actual coding. The website is developed in ASP.NET 2.0 using VB.NET and a SQL Server 2005 Express back end. The website works in all major browsers.

Title: Software Project Manager
Period: Jan 2006 - Dec 2008 (2 years, 11 months)

During this time web development had really taken off and almost completely replaced any desktop development strategy at our company. We began to implement client portals and more robust web applications that were focused less on internal administrative billing personnel and more focused on our consultants in the field. This was a major shift in not only our focus within the company but a major change in the kind of development required. We also migrated our sales CRM from an in-house PowerBuilder application to Salesforce.com and then back to an in-house web application. The final web application was written using Microsoft's .NET framework, heavy utilization of client-side Javascript and a SQL backend. We migrated a major service application from an in-house PowerBuilder application to another 3rd party desktop application and back in-house as a web application. The final web application was written using Microsoft's .NET framework with a SQL backend. I also spearheaded the efforts to move our Expense applications away from the desktop and out to the web. Again leveraging Microsoft's .NET framework, AJAX and a SQL backend we were able to expand the user base from primarily administrative staff to all employees. With the success of the Expense application we then expanded the same application to begin tracking Time as well as integrating into the service applications the ability to easily bill that time back to clients. Two client-facing web portals were built using ASP.NET 2.0 (and later upgraded to 4.0). The biggest challenges were determining how best to present our client's data back to them and maintaining a consistent experience across all major web browsers, include IE 6. Not only were we the first in our industry to provide online access but we have continued to differentiate ourselves in the marketplace with this offering.

Title: Software Developer
Period: Jun 2003 - Jun 2006 (3 years)

The vast majority of the development was still with Sybase/PowerBuilder however we had a small Classic ASP/VB6 intranet. My first project was rewriting our Time and Expense program out onto the web and maintenance of 2 additional websites. These websites were our corporate site and our corporate Intranet. I migrated over to ASP.NET 1.1 using VB.NET within a year or so of taking on the web developer position. We soon began migrating all of our PowerBuilder applications onto the corporate Intranet. I gained extensive web development experience as well as the fun of migrating from ASP.NET version 1.1 to 2.0, which was far more painful than 2.0 to 4.0.

Title: Network Administrator
Period: Jan 2002 - Jun 2004 (2 years, 5 months)

Primary responsibilities involved maintenance of our Novell servers on a token ring network, as well as our MS Exchange server. Several projects I was involved with were: - Migration from Token Ring to Ethernet - Migration from Novell to MS Active Directory - Exchange Server upgrade - Implementation of Outlook Web Access - Cisco network administration.

Title: Help Desk Technician
Period: May 2000 - Jan 2002 (1 year, 8 months)

Primary responsibilities was basic hardware help desk. Fixing printers, email troubleshooting and prepping new computers.

Company: HR Block Tax and Business Services
Title: District Network Administrator
Period: Nov 1999 - May 2000 (6 months)

I was responsible for the successful operation of all HR Block offices in the Greater Fort Wayne area (including New Haven and Auburn) for a tax season. Talk about a boot camp. I learned more about networks and servers in this 6 months than in the previous 2 years of tinkering and study. This included desktop, printer and server administration as well as a regular software upgrade cycle and administration of back office financials.
