Joe Gibson's current jobs
Started in my bachelor's final year with the expectation of turning it into a Masters project, the traction the business picked up, multiple awards and support from the University of Strathclyde meant that I withdrew from the masters program to pursue it 100%. Significant investment followed (led by Gabriel Investment Syndicate, matched by Scottish Enterprise and followed by the University of Strathclyde and 2 private investors). Now with 7 team members, an office and a workshop, we are accelerating the technology development at a significant pace.
As a powerboat instructor it is my job to deliver the RYA syllabus to qualify people with RYA Level 1 and Level 2 Powerboating Certificate. Additionally, I am qualified to teach the Safety Boat Course ensuring people have the ability to help dinghys, windsurfers, canoes and kayaks. It is my responsibility to teach my students to operate the powerboat in a safe and controlled manner.
Delivering the RYA sailing syllabus to young people and adults safely and effectively. I recognise the importance of being self-motivated and working with initiative and enthusiasm to deliver educational and fun sessions for anyone.
Joe Gibson's past jobs
Due to the nature of how I got the role, I did not have a normal internship. As a result, I worked on an abnormal variety of projects at a variety of levels across the Air sector of the business from engineering to strategy, patent law to analytics. This variety of experience allowed me to learn a lot about the aerospace defence industry whether it was a large project or a small one. • First intern in BAE System’s history to independently produce and file a patent • Contributed to high level corporate strategy for large scale projects • Independently researched new technology (e.g. PUFs) and introduced leading firm into BAE Systems to setup NDA and enabling a future partnership
In my time on the University Air Squadron I have developed my leadership and communication skills, ability to work in a team or present to large groups and initiative and decision making. I have received training on flying light aircraft and weapons handling. I participated in Exercise Juno Strike - a 10 day intensive field exercise. I have also travelled to Bavaria to learn to paraglide amongst the Alps and Gosport to be certified in VHF Radio Communication. I enjoyed various outdoor activities from Mountain Biking to the Nijmegen Marches. Giving back to the community is an important part of the University Air Squadron so I participated in the 5K Santa Dash, grew a RAF standard moustache for Movember (sorry to anyone who had to see that) and gave my time selling poppies for Poppy Scotland. As part of the RAF100 celebrations, the RAF, alongside Raytheon, hosted a STEM competition. We competed alongside RAF Regulars and Reservists with our Swarm Drone concept and made it all the way to the final (only UAS to make it). The University of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron has not only given me an insight into life in the RAF but has provided me with countless opportunities to receive world class training, free of charge, to develop a wide range of skills.
As an Event Safety Steward, some key responsibilities are: - To carry out pre/post-event checks - To help manage an even flow of people entering the venue/event - Control entry/exit movements in restricted areas, segregated areas, exit and entry points - To monitor spectators and deal with crowds; this may include preventing overcrowding and managing conflict - Investigate any disturbances or incidents - Respond to incidents and emergencies, raise the alarm and provide necessary and appropriate immediate help - To provide a high standard of customer care
I arrived at the camp, employed initially as a Sailing Instructor but my skills in other areas were very quickly realised. Sailing wasn't an activity that was done a lot at the camp and so my skills were adapted into other areas as a swimming instructor and lifeguard therefore responsible for health and safety both poolside and lakeside of young boys at the camp. I taught swimming to young people with a range of abilities prior to beginning lessons and provided support for many watersports activities. Halfway through the camp, my skills with a rifle were realised and I was asked to also work at the shooting range when possible. It is fair to say that I had no free time while working here but I loved every minute of it. I'm a hard worker and I thrive off the challenge of juggling all these responsibilities. Other responsibilities included checking chlorine levels in the pool, cleaning the poolside and planning lifeguard schedules for the week ahead.
My responsibilities at Largs Yacht Haven included: - Fuelling up boats - Administration of berth holders - Organising where new and visitor boats can berth - Problem solving customer queries - General Assistance across the marina
My role as a Assistant Sailing Instructor is to introduce beginners and take them through the RYA syllabus. I might also work with a Dinghy Instructor as part of a larger group to deliver a session.
