Joel Chaney's current jobs
The Resilient Oxygen (R-O2) Project is a new initiative centred around the development of an oxygen concentrator specifically designed for robustness and reliability in challenging conditions whilst being simple and affordable to repair in low resource settings (LRS). https://www.resilientoxygen.org
Founded CREATIVenergie as a charitable company to address the challenge of energy injustice in the world. We are a Christian organisation who does training, design and project delivery in small community scale renewable energy. Our vision is to build capacity and help enable renewable energy businesses to start and flourish, serving their people. We have most experience in biogas, but also have done work in biomass briquetting, bread ovens and solar drying.
Development of machine learning sensor system for accurately tracking occupancy patterns in a home, for automatically programming boilers and managing energy. The system has been build on open source hardware and involved the development of all aspects including communication protocols, algorithms and prototyping. Working on three demand side management project demonstration sites (Scotland, Italy and Portugal). Running participatory design workshops on community renewable energy, leading prototyping of approaches for creatively communicating renewable energy availability. For instance, we developed an 'energy clock' that lights up to show you the greenest time to use energy, and a community favorite, a galloping horse that runs faster the more renewable energy is available. I won funding to develop a project on biogas for cold climates. This has involved the development of an appropriate climate chamber with a control and measurement system. This work is ongoing.
Joel Chaney's past jobs
Founding Director of Connected Energy, developing ‘Last-mile information and communication technologies (ICT)’ to reduce barriers to delivering affordable renewable energy to those living off-grid. I developed the concept for, and lead the development of Smart Biogas (https://youtu.be/4gcjlY3uY-Q), a low cost monitoring system for small scale biogas systems.
Testing, modelling and optimising a new medium scale biomass boiler system to minimise emissions. Project funded by the Carbon Trust. Required regular reporting of progress to the funding body, as well as working closely with industry and academia. Working on the RHEES project (Rural Hybrid Energy Enterprise System) developing and testing low cost approaches to gas cleaning for gasification in collaboration with IIT Guwahati and University of Tezpur in India. I also working on improving the yield from biogas using biochar as a support media for biofilm development.
