Johnathan Mc Cullar's past jobs
Gardens by Mardi is a boutique garden design company that offers a unique look to the residential gardens of western North Carolina. We provide garden design/build services, container design services, annual maintenance programs and much more to mainly residential clients. As foreman I facilitate the owner/designer, Mardi Letson, by bridging the gap between her, clients and our team of gardeners. My duties include but are not limited to: managing and training gardeners on our team, staying informed on industry standards and sharing them with our team, managing logistics of materials and subcontractors to our job sites, managing our tools and equipment, capturing data from past job sites such as lessons learned and worklists on our online communication app, and much more.
Was responsible for propagating annual and perennial vegetative liner trays for internal use. I managed a crew of up to three individuals who assist in production. My greenhouse space was roughly 30,000 sq. ft. In peak of season we plant up to 5000 vegetative plug trays per week. I regularly put in 50-60+ hours weekly to maintain the integrity and vitality of plants.
I started at Costa by assisting finished growers of ornamental annuals and perennials in order to get a feel for what my strengths were. During this period i was to focus on moisture management, pest/disease identification, plant growth regulator and pesticide applications.
Assisted Dr. James Barrett in a wide array of poinsettia plant research such as the effect of heat delay on poinsettia flowering and bract development, plant growth regulator trials and poinsettia variety trials from a multitude of breeders.
At this plant tissue culture lab/greenhouse production facility I explanted about 50 different varieties of plants in the lab, extracted embryos from pine seed gametophytes, vegetatively propagated plants into liner trays, worked under the growers (pruning over grown plants, fertilizing, and overseeing the plants through the growing phase until they were ready to be graded and shipped).
Working for Delray Plants’ servicing company, Tropicare, I helped to maintain and emphasize their products that were sold in Home Depot’s garden centers. My main tasks were to keep the plants alive and advertise them with creative signage.
