I lead the University’s Information and Communications Technology function. This is a world-class technology services organisation that partners with the faculty’s, students, staff and alumni to advance research, science, engineering, medicine and business in support of the College’s mission to deliver benefits to society. The Information and Communications Technology team manages and supports; enterprise business applications, collaboration technology, data infrastructure, business intelligence, network engineering, telecommunications, web services, client services, Research Computing as well as the Information Security Office..

I work for the Department of Work and Pensions technology organisation, I have the title of Chief Technology Officer. In this role I look after a number of things for the departments’ Digital organisation @DWPDigital: In Architecture we set DWP Digital’s technology direction and standards, and ensures they are met, to bring high quality solutions and value for citizens and taxpayers. In Engineering we build, rationalise and modernises DWP applications to a high set of standards. In fact, we set the standards the rest of the department follows. We look after all the infrastructure, where we design, build and run the networks, remote access, telephony and systems management tooling such as ServiceNow. We drive the departments Cloud First strategy, so we design, build and run our applications of record, and public and private cloud hosting, and help product and service owners to transition to cloud. With Security being our zero requirement, we design and build security services protecting DWP’s information assets, such as anti-virus, certificates and intrusion detection. An then we look after all production services in what is fast becoming a world class Production Operations organisation where we manage infrastructure and applications services, designing, integrating and running operational change management, incident and problem management, end-to-end service management and event monitoring. If all this wasn’t exciting enough we also drive innovation for the department, the DWP Digital Innovation team is the team that tackles some of the biggest challenges our organisation faces. Here, we are not doing this in theory or abstract – we are learning by doing. We are working across industries from blue-chip to start-ups to reinvent everything from how we make payments using distributed ledger technologies, reinventing how we treat data, and many many other super cool things.

•Providing strategic consulting services across a portfolio of global telecom and media clients. •Created the OTT Strategy for leading Spanish cable operator including full business case and delivery plans. •Delivered the target BI + Analytics strategic vision, development programme and business case working with stakeholders across seven international locations for a global telco. •Defined Strategy and Set up Transformation Programme for leading UK Infrastructure and Media Telco.

•Directed high performing team of 300 multi-skilled engineers that successfully delivered BT Sport across Satellite, IP, Mobile and Web. Comprising a mixture of BT internal employees, subcon and partner organisations. •Managed a budget of +£38m to create an agile product development approach using design thinking to successfully broadcast BT Sport for first Premier League Game of the 2013 season. •Insourced and reorganised into an agile team achieving significant savings and performance improvements. •Directed TV product development: Onlive, Vision 2.0 (a new TV services infrastructure including backend and STB middleware), YouView, Multicast for linear TV into technical trials. •Designed the TVEverywhere companion applications running across IOS, Android, Console & Desktop devices •Represented BT Vision and Sport across various industry forums.

•Directed multidisciplinary team of 30 engineers to design and implement the CRM and provisioning platform upgrades for Norwegian telco resulting in integrated customer management and service provisioning.

•Worked across the globe on multiple major client technology initiatives in various leadership roles, including cable, wireless, wireline operators and equipment manufacturers. •Defined the IP architecture and delivered the UK wide IP network for the first Digital TV deployment in the World. •Directed the team that delivered the first VoIP over cable for major North American MSO to its first 1m subs managing a budget of +$33m.
