Kevin Cash's past jobs
Writing for companies like U.S. News, Credit Karma, Discover, Galvanized Media, Self Lender and Bond Street, among others. Occasional copywriter.
I left NerdWallet in September of 2016 to freelance/ work on my own business. At NerdWallet I wrote personal finance content that informs users, provides clarity on sometimes complex topics and ultimately guides decision making. I worked alongside writers, editors and copyeditors from outlets like: ABC, Bloomberg, Consumer Reports, Dow Jones, the Los Angeles Times, Money magazine, MSN Money, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. (Basically a modern-day super band of journalism — like Wings.) Duties beyond writing included: - Finding and pitching new syndications on unique content, ultimately building relationships in order to broaden brand visibility and exposure. - Working on a day-to-day basis with NerdWallet's compliance team to ensure various pieces of content were in compliance and that compliance protocol was followed. Also participated in design of new compliance strategies to meet sensitive needs of bank partners. - Writing copy for product and other areas of NerdWallet's website. - General content strategy: How can we get more users to our site through content? How can we increase social engagement? How can we optimize content to boost page views per session? (These questions only scratch the surface of what we'd consider on a daily basis.)
Worked directly with account executives to allocate, and ultimately slot, daily primetime ad space for clients such as Warner Brothers, Johnson & Johnson, P&G, Eli Lilly, etc. Left this job after being recruited by NerdWallet to write full-time.
- Drive traffic to the blog of an early stage, crowd-funded startup through the creation of high quality personal finance and lifestyle related content. - Optimize blog to best convert article readers into registered product users. - Build a team of competent financial writers. Create, define and foster guidelines for producing high converting content. Edit and prepare all submitted work. - Lead email marketing campaigns (MailChimp), Facebook ad campaigns and manage all social media accounts.
First "real" sales job. Sold a bunch of local business analytics software, often on cold leads. Made enough money to pay my rent. Met some amazing people in the trenches.
Sold SMB short-term capital at competitive (but still high) interest rates. Learned what a cold call is. Rejected a lot. Spent most days alone in a small cubical. My only direct coworker (great guy) came from selling infomercial gold coins. Humbled.
Worked with the Director of Sustainability mainly to increase participation in Bentley's recycling program. A focus was optimizing messaging to: 1. Make people recycle more and 2. Make them sort correctly. We correlated engagement statistics with specific campaigns to, I think, a moderate success. (I emptied a lot of recycling bins.) We also evaluated larger scale sustainability opportunities on Bentley's campus (wind, solar, solar heating, etc.). Spoiler alert: At the time, they weren't economically feasible. I suspect times have changed.
- Ported 60k+ account files to Salesforce.com's cloud storage system from the existing in-house Siebel storage system as part of a major company-wide data migration project. - Designed templates to assist and partially automate transition of data files, ultimately resulting in a hybrid transfer system reliant on both computer automation and basic human evaluation. - Was key point of contact for outsourced contractor teams in India and Ireland to upper management.
