Michael Holst's past jobs
I've had two tours-of-duty at Informatech, for three separate projects/clients. In addition to my full-time development duties I also have a leadership position within the company to help improve its talent pool and achieve operational excellence. Projects: - eLoyalty (Java, JavaScript, AngularJS, Bootstrap, Spring) Helped build new web applications for contact center support, and implemented Continuous Integration. - O.C. Tanner (Java, JavaScript, Spring, Oracle) Web development for employee appreciation applications. I've been involved in most of the stack, from integrating into legacy backends (ie. ORM Trilogy) for bug fixing of existing applications, to the creation of more modern rich clients with HTML5/JavaScript, backed by Spring plus existing enterprise services (such as EMC Documentum). Our releases included the Yearbook offering, and followed up with the new Leader Comments feature. - WJ Bradley (Java, SEAM, PostgreSQL) Web development in a set of financial applications for home mortgages. I was involved in implementing new features and fixing bugs in all parts of the stack.
Moved formally to Medidata Solutions, Inc. as part of their acquisition of Clinical Force. Projects: - CTMS (Java, JavaScript, Velocity, JasperReports, JMeter, MySQL) Following the acquisition of Clinical Force by Medidata, I was chiefly involved in a large effort to test the scalability of the CTMS content management system with several thousand simulated users. I used the existing JMeter scripts I had developed previously, and adapted them to the projected load. I also setup, profiled and debugged the application to find the main perfomance bottleneck in concurrent Velocity filesystem I/O usage.
I worked alongside an all-remote team of developers and QAs, distributed on three different continents. The company had developed a content management system, and they wanted to augment and improve with it with more modern web functionality and reporting. I was hired me to assist in the effort. Projects: - CTMS (Java, JavaScript, Velocity, JasperReports, JMeter, MySQL) The clinical trials CMS that the company developed and sold as SaaS was in need of some AJAX, as most of the interface was still using full page reloads. So I helped create some dynamic JavaScript code to integrate with the existing codebase, as well brainstorming and prototyping some reporting options with DynamicJasper. Also, in order to accurately test the scalability of the system I developed a set of JMeter scripts, and profiled the CTMS.
I led team of developers handling different projects at the same time, in several of which I had to write code directly. I also handled the setup and implementation of our developer tools including Subversion and CruiseControl.NET Projects: - PRAISE (ASP.NET, YUI, SQL Server) I developed an internal system for handling recognition of employee achievements. This was an internal project, and thus it was also used as a proof-of-concept of integrating ASP.NET into a rich JavaScript web application. - MIST(ASP.NET, SQL Server) This system was intented to replace an email workflow using an internal web application. My role was to help define requirements and drive the architecture. I also assisted the primary developer with supporting code. - Data Cleanup (C, AIX, DB2) Initially tasked with helping improve the cleanup of data coming from the mainframes. The process involved some small changes to AIX C applications connecting to DB2.This was done in conjunction with other developers, and afterwards offloaded to them. - ETL and Data Analysis (Alteryx, SQL Server SSIS) I helped compare Alteryx and SSIS for data analysis and transformation, by implementing sample scenarios, in order to derermine a suitable fit for the team.
I joined as the company as a developer for a very visible project in HP.com. Later I was promoted to an architecture and leadership role for a team of developers and QAs, working on a mission critical application. Projects: - Products & Services Catalog (.NET, SQL Server) I helped move the PSC project (which literally published hundreds of static product pages daily) to Costa Rica, and staff the team that would support it. We first stabilized the application (I was also developing as necessary), and in conjunction with the business setup a roadmap to tackle the main complexity and downtime drivers. I prioritized the setup of continuous integration and proper version control, while working on stable and new feature releases. The newer releases also rewrote most of the problematic legacy code, in which I had a direct development role in later phases. - Mercury Download Center (Java, JSP, Oracle) I was part of the team that implemented the Mercury (recently acquired by HP) product trial downloads. We created a web application that integrated in the the Sezame CMS and Passport SSO to drive the content and marketing pages. We also setup our own Subversion and build tools locally. - Release Manager Assistant (Java, JSP, YUI) A proof-of-concept for automating the release and publishing of content.
I developed for Uniscope remotely from Costa Rica, Chile, and also traveled to Japan for some months while training. The company was under contract from Cathay Pacific to help develop their airplane documentation maintenance and workflow. Projects: - Workflow Web Application for Cathay Pacific Airways (Java, JSF) I created a JSF application to integrate into the backend XML document workflow and drive it visually. - XML Workbench for Cathay Pacific Airways (Java, Swing) I helped develop a part for the XML workbench that dealt with component property auto-discovery, in order to edit the airplane documentation. - File Printing UI for Cathay Pacific Airways (Java, Swing) I was involved in creating a UI for generating print samples for the XML airplane documentation, in order to print them.
I was hired as a developer to support the local Costa Rica data entry operation. I inherited several C++ applications which I improved, automated manual processes and prototyped new business workflows. I also helped revamp the local IT setup and databases. Projects: - Local Search Prototype (Java, JSP, MySQL) Created a new Java web application from a workflow defined by management, to transform and prepare data statistically for local business information queries. - Production Plant Reports (PHP, MySQL) I implemented an internal web application to display daily production statistics, as it was previously done manually in Excel. - Data Cleaning Tools (QT, MySQL) Created a new set of C++ QT applications to eliminate manual data cleaning in text files. - Yellow Pages Enter Application (QT, MySQL) I inherited the existing YP Enter application, stabilized it, implemented new features, and upgraded it to the latest QT and Visual Studio releases.
I worked at ArtinSoft under flex time, while also attending college. I was part of the team the supported and developed the Informix to Java migrator. Projects: - Informix to Java Runtime (Java) I helped implement runtime features to support the Informix migrator. My work was centered in terminal form display in a Swing application. - Migrator testing (Java) I helped test daily builds for the Informix 4GL to Java migrator. We basically compared that the functionality was the same between migrated code and the original one for a set of tests.
