Company: Huygens ING (KNAW)
Title: Senior Researcher on migration, racial issues, diversity and inclusion
Period: Feb 2016 - Apr 2016 (2 months)
Location: The Hague Area, Netherlands

-Project "Migrant: Mobilities and Connection" -Research on cultural diversity and better engagement – Worked on the photographic images, registers, registration cards and policy files of the National Archives of Australia and the National Archives in The Hague. As an intern at the Huygens ING Institute, I was researching the ambivalent identities of Dutch migrants in Australia. I tried to portray how the Dutch and Australian governments utilized textual and visual information in photographs and photographic captions which were advertised in Australia and the Netherlands in order to entice Dutch migrants to Australia. The frame behind these photographs lies in the fact that the migrants, i.e. in my case the Dutch migrants were portrayed as 'good' abiding citizens, for whom assimilation was not an issue. However, can it all have been as straightforward as it has been portrayed? Were there consequences of the governmental framing which left a permanent mark on the migrants themselves? Was their cultural identity intact? Were the Dutch migrants indeed the ‘invisible’ Dutch as historiography suggests, or did they manage to keep a Dutch identity of their own by sticking to folklore like ‘Sinterklaas ’in the semi-private spheres of their own migrant organizations? These are the questions I have been working on at the Huygens ING Institute.
