In 1992, shortly after leaving Bear Stearns, I bought Unionwear. From that time until March 2020 we were making hats for Biden, Yang, Trump etc. along with backpacks for the US Army, tote bags for Vineyard Vines, and promotional products for the Made in USA market. When the Coronavirus crisis hit, we had to pivot quickly. So, we began manufacturing PPE for first responders. Currently, we are manufacturing 10,000 emergency face shields and 3000 reusable isolation gowns per day -- and growing. Before the crisis hit I have had a passion for two things: lean manufacturing and reshoring operations from overseas, both of which have served me well in this difficult time. I deployed the first-ever Manufacturing Resource Program (MRP) from Salesforce.com, and I embraced lean manufacturing. Achieving those goals meant I worked closely with New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP) to improve our processes. My full-time job right now is running more efficiently which is exposing bottlenecks, each of which need to be solved once they show up. This allows me to keep our prices competitive while supplying our hero first-responders with the equipment they need to serve our community. I am proud to employ 180 people, all of whom get great health insurance, are represented by SEIU (the same union that represents all healthcare workers in New York City) and are paid a fair wage, right in Newark, NJ.
