Ms. Nagaswami was Chief Investment Advisor to the administration of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, City of New York. She directed the Mayor’s Office of Pensions and Investments, with responsibility to advise the $120 Billion New York City Retirement plus two $10 Billion+ DC/ Deferred Compensation Systems - the largest city municipal system and the 17th largest retirement system in the world. • Advised the administration and served as Mayor Bloomberg’s investment Trustee at a time of contentious relations among principals and tremendous budgetary pressure related to pension contributions. • Developed a path-breaking restructuring plan for NYC’s strategic investment policy allocation, designed to balance investment risks across market environments thru asset class diversification and risk budgeting. A result of significant research with academics and industry thought leaders, the plan was unanimously adopted following multiple education sessions and consensus building with 60 Trustees representing interests of elected officials and employee unions as well as investment staff, the City’s Actuary and investment consultants. • Worked on key governance initiatives to overhaul decision making processes and reduce plan fees. • Published a peer-reviewed paper in the Rotman Journal of Pension Management on challenges faced by US Public Funds (http://www.rijpm.com/article/the-road-ahead-rethinking-the-investment-policy-roadmap). Invited frequently to speak at major pension/investing conferences.
Ms. Nagaswami was previously Chief Investment Officer (CIO) within the Blend Strategies team of AllianceBernstein L.P.; with responsibility for the firm’s $20 Billion strategic multi-asset portfolios and $85 Billion Blend equities strategies. She served from 2004 to 2008 as Chief Investment Officer and a member of the Executive Board of AllianceBernstein Investments, the retail division of the firm where she was widely credited with leading the heralded turnaround of the $180 Billion global mutual fund business. From 2001 until 2004, Ms. Nagaswami was a senior portfolio manager of the Bernstein U.S. Value Equities team and a member of the US Value Equities Investment Policy Group. Ms. Nagaswami joined Sanford C. Bernstein in 1999.
From 1986 to 1999, Ms. Nagaswami was at UBS Asset Management and its predecessor organizations where she progressed from quantitative analyst to Managing Director and Co-Head of U.S. Fixed Income.
