Keep track of development in public health domain, networking with state health department officials, private hospitals and independent public health experts and doctors, trends in healthcare, analyse policy matters, medical research, etc. On occasions, I would also covered Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and write stories related to disability, gender issues and offbeat topics. Some of my stories were carried as Page 1 lead and anchors.
I was part of the team that brought out the Sunday edition of the paper. Here, I wrote news features, which were in-depth stories on matters that were of relevance at that moment. Many on the articles pertained to health trends and developmental issues. I also wrote on offbeat subjects and profiles relevant to my target readers and also did page layouts. On occasions, I also did store and food reviews. During my stint there, some of my stories were also taken as lead, Page 1 pieces.
I covered news stories for Navi Mumbai, a sister city of Mumbai, for Mid Day Metro, the weekly community newspaper. Some of stories also appeared on Page 1. My work here gave me a rich experience in writing news and feature stories. I would cover civic problems, education, sports, food reviews, profiles and health.
I was part of the desk team in this weekly community newspaper, which covered seven suburbs of Mumbai. Each suburb had a dedicated newspaper for itself. I was in-charge of the listings page and edited stories and designed page layouts for newspapers of two suburbs. It was here that I learned the ropes of editing a copy well, to cross check facts and pay attention to details. These skills helped me immensely, when I became a reporter.
