The RE Children's Project was founded in 2010 as a 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to raising awareness and advancing research into rasmussen's encephalitis (RE); a devastating and rare epilepsy syndrome. We are currently funding for DNA studies of rasmussen's brain tissue in conjunction with NYU Langone. (see attachment). RE primarily impacts children causing incurable seizures, cognitive deficits and paralysis of 1/2 of the body. The disease process typically runs its course over a 1 to 2 year period during which time one half of the body is rendered useless (hemiplegia) while epileptic seizures continue unabated resulting in cognitive impairment. The only treatment is a radical brain surgery---hemispherectomy--the removal or disconnection of half the brain. Executive Producer--Voice of the Epilepsies, Documentary 2018
