NAB India Centre for Blind Women and Disability Studies was started in 2002 with an objective to change the status of blind women in India by empowering them through training, education and guidance to be self dependent. It is the only organization who explores and opens new paradigms for blind in India. In order to explore, the NABCBW came across an interesting fact that there are many blind women who dreamt of working in medical field apart from physiotherapy but unable to live those dreams because most of them are not allowed to pursue science as a subject after 8th or 10th standard. NAB India Centre brought “Discovering Hands” project in India in 2017 after a due research on the feasibility of the technique and acceptance of the method by doctors in India. Discovering Hands is an innovative program developed by a renowned German gynaecologist Dr. Frank Hoffmann to provide accessible breast screening for women under the age of 50 who are not covered under any preventive screenings. It is one of its kind of project in Asia, which trains blind and visually impaired women to use their superior sensory touch to detect any abnormalities in the breasts and early signs of breast cancer. NAB India Centre is the only organization in Asia, which trains blind and visually impaired women to become Medical Tactile Examiners (MTEs) who conducts a detailed, safe, repeatable and accurate clinical breast examination without any radiation or side effects.
