Steve sold Virtual Growth to Insperity (NYSE: NSP), becoming Division President of Insperity Financial Management Services. While President of Insperity Financial Management Services, Steve had the opportunity to study how Insperity scaled a multi-billion dollar high-touch, high-tech service organization. Working directly for CEO Paul Sarvadi, Steve learned how an empowered workforce can create a highly profitable company. He learned how management can infuse passion in employees by building a company where people work to live, not live to work.
When Netscape 1.0 launched in 1994, Steve saw the potential of the Internet and founded Virtual Growth, the world’s first client accounting service. He raised $43 million from blue chip venture capital , including Bessemer Ventures and Citigroup Ventures, Virtual Growth served middle market companies and become the largest middle market provider of outsourced accounting services in the U.S. The company created Virtual Accountant, the first Web-based accounting system.
Steve joined Amnesty International USA weeks after the conclusion of the Human Rights Now! concert tour, when the organization had ballooned from $6 million to $18 million, thanks to Bruce Springsteen, U2, Sting, Peter Gabriel and other human rights friends. He was responsible for everything not related to human rights . His charge was to build the infrastructure for the organization to handle its 300% growth, including finance, fundraising, IT and Human Resources. As CFO he implemented management accounting with a focus on operating results not just on keeping the auditors and IRS happy. Steve also served on the worldwide Computer Communications Working Group, responsible for deciding how to use new technology to stop global human rights abuses.
Steve began his career at Ernst & Young in New York where he grew from college intern manager in the company’s accounting system design consulting group. After two years as an auditor, specializing in international banking and foreign currency. He moved to EY consulting where he designed, implemented integrated accounting systems for global Fortune 100 companies, During his tenure at EY, Steve came to realize small businesses had the same needs for an automated back office, however at the technology was not yet affordable.
