Since it’s inception in 2015, we have worked with more than 250 students, 15 teachers and 10 families across 3 schools, to diagnose the problems with adolescents. We believe that enabling an individual to express freely is very potent in empowering the individual. Hence, empowering people through self-expression stands as our core philosophy. Our work is primarily based on providing an unbiased and non-judgemental environment for adolescents to channelize their abundant energies through self-expression. The process clears their mind from undesired and disturbing thoughts and enables them to understand life situations from different viewpoints. This process cultivates sensitivity and maturity among adolescents and builds the necessary confidence to deal with life challenges. Stakeholders which include family, teachers and peers play an important role in enabling adolescents to smoothly sail through the challenges of their age. Thus, we adopt a collaborative approach with all stakeholders to provide an environment for their holistic growth.
I joined the organisation eager to understand the method to constructively channelise abundant energies of the students. My role was to facilitate the developed and customised IIT-JEE content to students through peer learning methodology, understand group dynamics and identify different learning styles. I designed and implemented activities enabling them to express more freely and bringing a positive change to their outlook. These interactions led to students becoming more responsible and confident. The experience brought to the fore my innate capability to connect with students effortlessly. After 8 months of involvement, I decided to build a much larger platform to create value for students.
It's a 2-year residential programme, to develop leadership skills of individuals and bringing about a systemic change in the government schools. I worked with 5 Government School Headmasters in improving the learning outcome and holistic development of students. Our role included engagement with village communities to involve people in the development of school and village. The process brought into focus personal leadership skills which enabled me to become more self-aware and encouraged me for the following initiatives: - Conducted a project to improve the parent-children relationship within the village community. - Conducted capacity building sessions for headmasters and teachers helping them to improve their teaching methods and leadership skills. - Launched a village magazine ‘Chokhi Vani’ which served as a platform for the community to express their life stories and engage with each other. 4 issues were launched by youth in the village after I left. - Designed reflective tools, debriefs and sessions for fellows, staff meetings for teachers, activities for kids, to give them a platform to express, accept and appreciate themselves as well as others. Activity-based learning was practised which improved the learning outcome of students and sports for girls was introduced in some schools. Different platforms within the school were created to develop confidence in students. - Conducted a 15-day assessment process with 20 volunteers at the block level to gather the learning outcomes of students in schools we worked at. I identified acting as a bridge between different stakeholders as my core strength. Engaging with the complete ecosystem made me realise the importance of expressions at a different level. It becomes a medium to bring clarity, see things from multiple perspectives and developing the strength to take informed decisions.
After completing engineering I joined the college. Teaching students suit me better than any corporate opportunity. My role was to teach electronics, conduct practicals and to do an overall performance assessment of students. Experimenting through one-on-one and group conversations, to resolve academics, personal and interpersonal issues, I realised that ownership can be brought through an unbiased environment which increases self-confidence. I realised that being a teacher is a responsibility. Students look for friendly attitude and compassion in teachers to open up to them for their problems. The role of a teacher lies in making students responsible.
