Vikas Kumar

I have been appointed a Visiting Professor at Bristol Business and Law School. As a visiting Professor, I will deliver guest lectures, conduct seminars, and contribute to ongoing research projects, enriching the academic environment for both students and faculty. I have collaborated with many faculty members on research initiatives, helping to foster partnerships between institutions. I aim to enhance the host institution's reputation and provide valuable networking opportunities for students and staff.

Prof. Vikas Kumar is the Associate Dean for Research, Innovation, and Enterprise at Birmingham City University. He is also a Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management and is recognised as a leading academic in his field. Prof. Kumar's expertise lies in sustainable operations, supply chain resilience, and integrating Industry 4.0 technologies. He has an extensive publication record in top-tier journals, showcasing his deep knowledge in these areas. Beyond academia, he collaborates closely with industry partners to enhance organisational efficiency and sustainability. As a mentor and educator, he is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of supply chain professionals. In his current role, Prof. Kumar oversees the REF2029 submission for UoA17, UoA18, UoA4, UoA20, and UoA21 while providing strategic direction to improve the faculty and broader university-level research environment.

As a Director of Research, I oversee and advance the research strategy within the Faculty of Business and Law. This role involves setting research priorities, securing funding, and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. I manage research teams, ensure compliance with ethical and regulatory standards, and support the development of early-career researchers. I also collaborate with external partners, including industry and academic institutions, to drive impactful research initiatives. Additionally, I play a key role in translating research outcomes into practical applications and aligning research activities with the organisation's strategic goals. In addition, I was responsible for managing REF2021 submissions of the Bristol Business School (UoA 17 & UoA 18), providing strategic direction to the faculty research strategy, and reshaping the faculty research strategy in the wake of the UWE 2030 strategy.

As a Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management, I led cutting-edge research that significantly advanced my knowledge in supply chain management. I was deeply involved in developing and managing a robust research agenda around supply chains and working on interdisciplinary projects that attracted substantial external funding from EPSRC, British Academy, British Council, Newton Fund, Royal Academy of Engineering, etc. I have generated close to £1m in research funding from external agencies. I consistently publish high-impact research in top-tier journals (IJPR, IJPE, JIT, TFSC, BSE, JBR, etc.) and contribute to the global academic discourse through conferences and collaborations. I actively mentor and supervise PhD students and early-career researchers, fostering an environment of innovation and scholarly excellence. I have successfully supervised 5 PhD students and have been involved in overseeing another 3 PhDs. I am also actively engaged in peer review, editorial duties, external examinations, and developing research strategies that align with institutional goals. I have played an instrumental role in shaping the research culture of Bristol Business and Law School and contributing to the broader academic community through leadership and service.

Worked as an Associate Professor in Enterprise Operations Management at Bristol Business School, University of the West of England, UK. Prior to joining UWE, I worked as a Lecturer at Dublin City University Business School in Republic of Ireland from 2009-2013. In past I have also worked for the University of Hong Kong and University of Exeter. At UWE currently I am teaching modules on 'System, Structures and Operations' and 'Management Research Methods' and actively involved in supervising research masters and doctoral students. I serve on the editorial board of around seven international journals including International J. of Supply Chain and Operations Resilience, Int. J. of Service, Economics, and Management and Int. J. of Manufacturing Systems. I have also guest edited a number of special issues including J. of Information Technology (ABS 3*), Supply Chain Management an Int. J. (ABS 3*), Production, Planning & Control (ABS 3*), In. J. of Engineering Management and Economics (IJSEM), Int. J. of Lean Enterprise Research (IJLER), and Int. J. of Lean Six Sigma (IJLSS). I am actively reviewing for more than 10 international journals including IJPR, IJPE, PPC, IJPE, SCMIJ, ESWA, IJOPM, JIMS and CAIE. I am currently working on three research projects funded by British Academy/Newton Fund, British Council and EPSRC/Innovate UK with collaborators in UK, Thailand, Vietnam and Brazil. My current research focus is on green and sustainable supply chain management, short food supply chains and process improvement. My other research interests include process modelling, innovation in SMEs, operations strategy, and service supply chains. I am currently supervising a number of Masters and PhD students. I also welcome PhD applications broadly in the area of operations and supply chain management including sustainable supply chains, short food supply chain, process modelling, service operations, and green/low carbon supply chains.
