Biotechpharma is a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO) providing contract services for biopharmaceuticals: it's a vertically integrated CDMO that has its own R&D Centre and GMP manufacturing facilities, allowing Biotechpharma to develop pharmaceutical molecules from "gene to finished drug products" using microbial and mammalian cell lines. Biotechpharma is capable of produce proteins from microbial (300 L) and mammalian (1000 L) cell lines, followed by the protein purification (at room or +4°C temperature) and manufacturing of final drug product aliquoting it into syringes or vials. Achievements: • An interdisciplinary bioengineering and chemistry department established, providing biological and technical education to bioengineers; • From 1994 to 2009 a total of 184 bioengineering bachelors (11 crops), 65 bioengineering masters (9 crops) were prepared; of them, over 30 are currently employed with the science and production centres of Sicor Biotech, UAB. Achievements: • More than 20 different recombinant human and mammal protein products developed (the first one – in 1983); • In 2003, Sicor Biotech’s biotechnological drug GRASALVA, which is based on the active pharmaceutical ingredient of the recombinant human protein G-CSF was registered in Lithuania; • In 2008, TevaGrastim, a biotech medical preparation by Sicor Biotech, UAB, was registered in the European Union, Lithuania included; • In 2012, TevaGrastim, was registered in US;

Achievements: • Development, production and marketing of recombinant pharmaceutical preparations; • Chartered research; • Lithuania registers Somatogenas-L (recombinant human growth hormone); • In order to meet the global GMP standards and aiming at foreign exports, the company started to actively look for investors, resulting in an influx of LTL 80 million of investment funds (Gatio Investment).

Achievements: • Market development of medicinal recombinant proteins; • Restructuring of the institute, establishment of individual science/production companies: the cell biology reagent company Fermentas and the gene engineering pharmacy company Biofa, which have grown to modern biotech companies of a global scale; • With the science/production units growing and branching out from the institute, on the basis of the molecular biology centre and the gene engineering centre several fundamental research laboratories were established to operate and successfully participate in different international projects to this day.

Achievements: Research of medicinal recombinant proteins and preparation of the technology to produce them: • Production technologies for medicinal recombinant proteins (alfa2b-interferon, beta-interferon, tumour necrosis factor, interlaukin-2, human growth hormone, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor, etc.) were developed, the physical/chemical and biological properties of such proteins were fully investigated. • Technologies for human alfa2b-interferon and human growth hormone were integrated into production; • Methodology to clone and express recombinant protein in microorganisms was designed. Research in this area allowed developing exceptionally efficient super-expression systems; • Original release, purification and quality control methods for recombinant proteins were developed; • Over 10 unique hybridomas that produce monoclone antibodies against different cytokine epitopes and human immunoglobulin antigen determinant were created; • In 1989, Reaferonas (recombinant human interferon alfa-2b) / Realdiron – the first recombinant preparation to successfully pass clinical tests was registered. That was the first drug developed on the basis of recombinant proteins to be registered in a post-Soviet and Eastern and Central European country and the fifth out of six such preparations in the world.
