The Clean Combustion Research Centre at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have developed a unique Ultrasonic Oxidative Desulfurisation (uODS) technology centered test rig that promotes the ‘greening’ of traditional marine fuels by converting 3.5% HSFO to <0.5% VLSFO through an in situ sonication process thereby significantly reducing the carbon footprint for making globally compliant VLSFO to be used as ship bunkers in the KSA and broader MENA region. The new and revolutionary uODS and CCRC technologies add immeasurably to the mosaic of solutions our industry needs to reasonably, responsibly and sustainably decarbonise the shipping industry. Additionally, KAUST built a bespoke Cryogenic Carbon and Sulphur Capture (CCSC) technology centered test rig which yields zero to near zero SoX, NOX and CO2 ship stack emissions which eliminates the need for highly polluting open loop scrubbers that ships discharge directly overboard, leaving a ‘carbon slick’ in its wake. These technologies are REAL game changers for our industry on our noble journey to decarbonise shipping by 2050 to meet or exceed our industry’s IMO mandated emission reduction targets.
