In 2003, I was on an expedition to a very remote part of the Peruvian Amazon along the Peruvian-Brazilian border. My traveling companion became extremely ill, but fortunately we were found and rescued by local indigenous Matsés people. They were able to nurse my friend back to health and transported us to a Peruvian military outpost where we were able to be evacuated. I was so moved and appreciative of the strength and generosity of the Matsés people that I wanted to reciprocate assistance. In 2010, I met a physician and ethnobotanist Chris Herndon and together we co-founded Acaté Amazon Conservation with the mission to help the Matsés people.
